Best Retainers After Invisalign: Vivera, Essix, Hawley and Fixed
The best retainer after Invisalign is usually a clear removable retainer worn nightly, often combined with a bonded wire behind the lower front teeth for patients at high risk of relapse. Here is what we actually use and why.
Vivera retainers
Align Technology’s own retainer, made from the same digital scan used for your aligners. The material is noticeably thicker and more rigid than an aligner, so it resists cracking. Vivera ships in sets, which means you already have replacements when one warps or gets lost. If you travel often or you have a habit of wrapping retainers in tissue at restaurants, the spare set is worth the price on its own.
Essix retainers
A clear vacuum-formed retainer made in the lab from a model of your finished teeth. Functionally similar to Vivera, thinner, cheaper, and easier to replace locally. A reasonable choice if budget matters and you are careful with appliances.
Hawley retainers
The classic acrylic plate with a labial wire. Less discreet, far more durable, and adjustable, which is genuinely useful if a tooth needs a nudge later. Fixed or bonded retainers
A thin multistrand wire bonded to the tongue side of the front teeth, usually lower canine to canine, sometimes upper too. The trade-off is hygiene. Plaque collects along the wire, so you need floss threaders or interdental brushes daily, and a bond can quietly detach without you noticing. How Long Do You Wear a Retainer After Invisalign?
Wear it 20 to 22 hours a day for the first three to six months, then every night indefinitely. That last word is the one people argue with, so here is the reasoning.
- Months 0 to 6: full-time wear, out only for meals, brushing and flossing. This is when bone remodelling is most active and when relapse is fastest.
- Months 6 to 12: most patients step down to nights only, plus a few hours in the evening if the fit ever feels snug.
- Year 2 onward: nightly. Some stable cases manage on four or five nights a week, but that decision belongs to your orthodontist, not to a forum post.

How to Clean and Care for Your Retainers
Clean your retainer every morning with a soft brush and cool water, never toothpaste and never hot water. Toothpaste is abrasive and scratches the plastic; those micro-scratches trap stain and bacteria and turn a clear retainer cloudy within months. Heat is worse, because the thermoplastic distorts and a distorted retainer will actively push your teeth in the wrong direction.
- Rinse the moment you take it out, before saliva dries on it.
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush and a drop of mild soap, then rinse well.
- Soak once or twice a week in a retainer cleaning tablet. Skip household bleach and mouthwash with alcohol.
- Never leave it in a car in a Dubai summer, and never rinse it in hot tap water. Both warp it.
- Always use the case. Retainers wrapped in a napkin get thrown away, and dogs love them.

Retainers in Dubai typically run from around AED 800 to AED 2,500 per arch depending on the type, and a full Vivera set sits at the higher end. These are indicative ranges and need confirmation from the clinic for your specific case, since some Invisalign packages already include the first retainer set.
- Essix clear retainer: roughly AED 800 to AED 1,200 per arch.
- Hawley retainer: roughly AED 900 to AED 1,500 per arch.
- Vivera set: roughly AED 2,000 to AED 3,500 for multiple sets covering both arches.

The retention appointment itself is short. You need them. There is no version of orthodontic treatment, aligners or braces, that produces a permanently stable result without retention. Any clinic that finishes your case without a retention plan has not finished your case.
Do you have to wear retainers forever after Invisalign?
For practical purposes, yes, but “forever” means a few minutes at night, not full-time wear. After the first year most patients are on nights only, and many stay comfortable at three to five nights a week once the case has proven stable for several years. Can Invisalign aligners be used as a retainer?
