Pitts 21 is a passive self-ligating bracket system built around a square 0.021 inch slot, developed by Dr. Tom Pitts to deliver full three dimensional control earlier in treatment. The name is the slot size. That is the whole idea in a number.

Here is why the shape matters. In a rectangular slot, a round or undersized early wire has room to roll, so torque (the angle of the tooth root inside the bone) does not express until you reach a large finishing wire late in treatment. A square slot lets a square wire seat with far less play much sooner. Pitts 21 pairs this with a protocol its users call early light short elastics, worn from around week six, which starts building the bite relationship while the teeth are still aligning rather than after.

A skilled specialist on Damon will beat an inexperienced one on Pitts 21 every time, and it is not close. The bracket is a tool. Wire sequencing, elastic timing, anchorage planning and knowing when to stop are the skill.
